This application is both an Accounting Tool
and a Simulation. It shows the relationships
and integration between the Financial Statements.
Firstly, it uses
color coding and graphics to show the interactive nature between such
transactions as sales, purchasing, borrowing, investing and stock
decisions.
Secondly, it simulates 12 quarters of basic business operation and
presents the outcomes through the 'eyes' of the Financial Statements.

This
Accounting Tool displays an Income
Statement, Comparative Balance Sheet and two forms of Cash Flow (Direct
and Indirect) as an integrative set.
The relationships of various transaction types and how they affect each
report, can be examined using this tool. A set of transaction
types are displayed by selecting the 'Menu'
button on the application and then choosing 'Highlighting'.
Selecting a transaction type will cause all report entries that are
affected by this transaction type to change color. Changing the
Price decision variable will then cause the
values of these highlighted entries to change value. The
Cash and Stock
decision variables can also be changed to show respective transaction
value changes on the financial statements. Choose the 'Clear'
menu option to reset all color coding back to its original state.

The Simulation
part of this application begins in Period 1 with production of 20,000
units of product. Each unit currently sells for $20.
Price
and Production may be changed to reflect
new business strategies. These decisions may be changed from their
initial values by pressing the up/down arrows by each entry. The
Borrow,
Equipment Purchase, Investment, Sell Stock, Buy
Stock and Dividend
decisions apply to sources and uses of Cash.
A summary of four metrics is displayed below the Balance Sheet.
As the 'Simulate' button
is pressed, up to 12 periods of simulated business activity can be
studied. The Metric Summary displays
how important business outcomes change with changes in the decision
variables. Financial Statement changes should also be studied.
Other reports and charts are available by selecting the 'Menu'
button. The 'ReSet' option will
cause the simulation to re-start and begin at Period 1.
